CCA: Stop the Sale

The Scottish Society of Playwrights has joined creative unions in calling for a halt to any potential sale of the CCA building in Glasgow.

The Creative Unions Group, as members of the STUC, have regularly met with Creative Scotland and the Scottish Government over the past few years to improve stakeholder engagement in the sector. The CCA has frequently been on the agenda, in particular through 2026 following the collapse of the existing management company.

Unions were advised of the proposed tender for new management to lease and run the building, with positive commitments made about securing the reopening as an arts and cultural venue.

The inclusion of a potential sale of the building in this tender caught the entire sector by surprise.

The Letter

On Thursday 20th August, union representatives delivered a letter to the Board of Creative Scotland demanding a halt to any proposed sale, and for immediate consultation on securing the future of the building.

We also asked that they publish evidence and findings from the investigation into the collapse of the CCA, commit to transparent sector engagement, and reaffirm their commitment to the Fair Work for Freelancers agenda.

A collective call for fairer freelance work

Alongside the SSP, the STUC unions behind the Freelance and Forgotten report include Equity, BECTU, Musicians’ Union, Scottish Artists Union, Society of Authors, Writers’ Guild and the National Union of Journalists. Together, we form the Scottish Creative Unions Group.

The SSP continues to work with fellow unions and sector partners to improve the rights, protections, and working conditions of freelancers in Scotland, and to ensure that fair work is treated not as an aspiration, but as a basic minimum standard across the creative industries.
