Is my project a development opportunity or a commission?

If you are engaging on a project which is not leading to a full commission at minimum industry rates, this is a “development opportunity” and not a “commission” and should be advertised as such.

The SSP requires that any project described as a “commission” has a full recognised industry contract in place and is paying agreed standard rates.

Is this ‘competition’ really a cut-price commission?

Competitions are a great platform for generating new work and gaining wider recognition. What they shouldn’t be is a disguised commission that expects a playwright to produce a manuscript without paying appropriate fees.

We support WGGB’s position on competitions.

WGGB Guide to Writing Competitions

WGGB created these excellent guidelines and key principles for writers. Do read and consider them prior to committing any work or placing an entry.

How much should I expect to be paid?

For details on what you should expect to be paid as a writer and when, please refer to the resources above for the type of commission or project.

All rates quoted are minimum terms agreed with the SSP. You should not expect to be paid below union rates for your work.
